The Ultimate Guide to Shopping at Your Local Asian Grocery Store (And What to Buy!)

If you've ever walked into an Asian grocery store, you know it can be an overwhelming experience. Brightly colored packages, shelves stacked with unfamiliar ingredients, and aisles full of mystery can leave you wondering, “What on earth do I buy here?”

Well, you’re not alone! Growing up in a small rural town in southwest Nebraska, I didn’t have much exposure to international cuisine. I was used to the standard American fare, and trips to bigger cities were a whole new world for me, especially when it came to food. Fast forward to today, I’m now living in a larger city and married into a multicultural family. Trips to the Asian market have become a regular part of my life.

The beauty of shopping at an Asian grocery store lies in the incredible variety, authenticity, and affordability. Whether you’re looking to branch out from your usual supermarket routine or want to add some flair to your meals, these markets offer everything you need. Plus, it’s a great way to support locally owned businesses that are involved in their communities.

Here’s a breakdown of what to grab during your next visit to an Asian grocery store (trust me, you’ll thank me later)!

Why Shop at an Asian Grocery Store?

If you’re still on the fence, let me give you a few compelling reasons to make that trip to your local Asian market:

1. Authenticity

Asian grocery stores provide ingredients that are essential for traditional recipes from China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and beyond. You won’t find the same level of variety and authenticity at your typical grocery chain.

2. A Wide Array of Options

From fresh produce to spices, condiments, and snacks, the options here are endless. It’s a whole new world of food waiting to be explored!

3. Budget-Friendly

Certain pantry staples, like soy sauce, rice, and spices, are often more affordable in Asian grocery stores than in larger chain supermarkets. Plus, you’ll find larger quantities, which can save you money in the long run.

4. Locally Owned

Many Asian markets are independently owned, and by shopping there, you’re supporting a local business that often works closely with the community. It’s a win-win!

5. Exposure to New Flavors

Whether you’re a culinary adventurer or just want to try something different, these stores are packed with flavors you won’t find anywhere else. It’s the perfect way to spice up your meals (literally and figuratively)!

What to Buy at the Asian Grocery Store?

Ready to dive in? Here’s a list of some must-buy items, along with a few personal favorites from my own pantry!

Produce & Refrigeration

Asian grocery stores often carry produce you won’t find in your typical supermarket. Here are a few gems to look out for:

  • Kimchi: A spicy, fermented cabbage dish that packs a punch of flavor. It's perfect as a side dish or to add to any meal.

  • Tofu: Whether you love it or haven’t tried it yet, the variety of tofu available (silken, firm, extra-firm) is a game-changer.

  • Pickled Daikon Radish: Crunchy and tangy, this is a fantastic addition to any Asian-inspired dish.

  • Mushrooms: From shiitake to enoki, Asian markets carry a variety of fresh mushrooms that add richness and depth to any recipe.

  • Seaweed Salad: Light and refreshing, this dish is often dressed in a tangy sesame oil-based sauce.

  • Exotic Fruits & Vegetables: Look for ingredients like longan, bitter melon, or fresh curry leaves. Your taste buds are in for a treat!

Meat & Fish

Whether you're a carnivore or a pescatarian, you’ll find a great selection of meat and seafood here:

  • Bones: Want to make your own bone broth? Asian markets often sell marrow and knuckle bones at a fraction of the price you’d pay elsewhere. It’s the secret to a rich, flavorful broth!

  • Beef & Pork Cuts: From collagen-rich cuts to perfect pieces for marinating, you’ll find cuts that are hard to find elsewhere.

  • Squid: A must for dishes like stir-fries or seafood soups. Trust me, once you try fresh squid, you’ll wonder why you didn’t sooner.

Condiments & Sauces

Asian condiments are the heart and soul of many dishes, and there are endless varieties to try:

  • Sriracha: Full of garlic, spice, and a little sweetness, Sriracha is an essential. I was never a fan of the famous red bottle, but after discovering Tiger Brand Sriracha, I was instantly converted as soon as it touched my tastebuds. It's bursting with the perfect balance of heat and garlic!

  • Soy Sauce: A must-have in many Asian sauces and dishes like stir-fries, marinades, and sushi.

Sesame Oil: Perfect for drizzling over dishes to add a nutty depth.

  • Korean Pastes:

    • Gochujang: A Korean red chili paste that’s both spicy and savory. It’s essential for Korean BBQ, soups, and stews.

    • Doenjang: A fermented soybean paste that adds a rich, earthy flavor to Korean dishes like stews and soups.

    • Ssamjang: A thick, spicy paste for Korean BBQ, packed with the perfect balance of gochujang, doenjang, and sesame oil.

  • Fish Sauce: A pungent but absolutely delicious addition to many Southeast Asian dishes.

  • Rice Vinegar: Light and tangy, it's perfect for sushi rice or dressings.

  • Miso Paste: A fermented soybean paste that’s perfect for soups, sauces, and marinades. Choose white for a milder flavor, or red for a bolder, saltier taste.

Tip: Opt for the large bottles when you can--refilling your smaller containers at home is so much more cost-effective!

Spices

Asian grocery stores often carry spices at great prices, and you’ll find unique varieties that add flavor to everything from soups to stir-fries.

  • Gochugaru (Korean Chili Flakes): Smokey, spicy, and slightly sweet—perfect for adding heat without overwhelming the flavor of your dish.

  • Nori Furikake: A Japanese seasoning made with seaweed, sesame seeds, and dried fish. Sprinkle it over rice for an instant umami boost.

Pantry Staples

  • Rice: From short-grain to jasmine, and even black rice, Asian grocery stores have a vast selection of rice that caters to all your culinary needs.

  • Noodles: Whether you’re making pho, ramen, or stir-fried noodles, Asian markets carry a wide variety of noodles: vermicelli, udon, soba, and more.

  • Seaweed: Stock up on nori for sushi, wakame for soups, or other types of seaweed to add to your meals for extra umami.

Drinks

Asian grocery stores carry tons of interesting drinks that you won’t find at regular stores.

  • Herbal Teas: From black tea to chai--there is an option for everyone. I always keep green tea and ginseng tea in stock. They’re both incredibly refreshing and come with amazing health benefits.

  • Mushroom Coffee: Yes, it’s a thing—and no, it doesn’t taste like mushrooms! It’s a great alternative to regular coffee, with a smooth, earthy flavor.

  • Drinking Vinegar: Petitzel or Hongcho brands of drinking vinegars are some of our family’s favorites. We mix them with sparkling water for a refreshing, kombucha-like experience.

Frozen Foods & Snacks

  • Bao Buns & Dumplings: When I’m in a pinch or entertaining guests, I keep frozen bao buns and dumplings stocked. They’re quick, easy, and always a crowd-pleaser.

  • Seaweed Snacks & Dried Squid: Seaweed snacks are a great healthy snack, and dried squid is a unique treat if you’re feeling adventurous.
